What is Rose Water?
Rose water or hydrosol is actually a byproduct of making Rose perfumes; it is what is left over after the volatile essential oils are removed. It is mildly fragrant and has a slightly sweet flavor.
Rose water has been used for thousands of years throughout the world. It’s been used traditionally in beauty products and food and drink products. 1
Where does Rose water come from?
The rose plant and its varieties are cultivated in all over the world including Iran, Europe, Bulgaria, Turkey and India (1).
Rose water is made from fragrant rose pedals. The pedals are crushed and steam distilled to extract the volatile essential oils and other compounds for use in perfumes. The remaining water contains water soluble compounds such as carboxcylic acids (fragrance, antioxidants etc.) and may contain small amounts of essential oils (typically 0.01 – 0.04%) 2. Hence it is the essence of roses in distilled water or Rose water and non-oily.
What does Rose water do?
This plant contains several components such as terpenes, glycosides, flavonoids, and anthocyanins and carboxcylic acids that have beneficial effects on human health. The antioxidants in rose water protect the cells in the skin against damage.3
